Eric, I’m implementing SPV. I think I found the code points where blocks are processed, so that in SPV mode they can be disabled. Now for completeness I should also find where transactions and compact blocks are received so I can disable their processing too. NONE of those should be stored to disk in SPV mode, that happening would be illegal, so I should carefully identify each code path. My guess is that both transactions and compact blocks are handled in proxy.cpp. If you have any clarifications about how to do this right & which are the right code locations, let me know!

It’s a much bigger design question than I can answer here.

$ bx fetch-height
connection timed out
is the internet down or is it just me?

I suspect the default configured server was/is offline.
Doug Luce22:07
looks like the client i downloaded is from 2017
wondering if mainnet.libbitcoin.net is outdated or just not maintained any longer

The community nodes at present are mainnet1/mainnet2 and mainnet5. Soon, there should be a mainnet6. DNS control points mainnet to one of those nodes at a given time. Right now it's set to mainnet5. So if it's not working, manually try mainnet1 or mainnet2 in the meantime.
Doug Luce20:06
gottit, thanks.

Sorry try that
Doug Luce22:50
cool, thanks! nothing to be sorry about.
can bx pull that from a conf or env var?
evan22:52
I believe it should but if it's not you can most definitely edit the conf
Should be bs.cfg
Doug Luce22:53
huh, seems it expects a conf to be in /Users/Mica/explorer-qrcode-prefix/etc/libbitcoin/bx.cfg for some reason
evan22:54
Oh for explorer lol yeah
bx.cfg
Doug Luce22:55
at least on this osx box
who’s Mica?

It's the name of the box I compiled on. The existence of those strings in the binary doesn't necessarily imply that it is looking there. That's the location where it was compiled (along with all of the other sources you are showing below). It's not clear to me why the compiler embedded those paths, or why they were not stripped when I explicitly did so, but it should not affect the default search path at runtime.
evan22:57
I would image the User profile that it installed under

Doug Luce22:58
not on this box, it’s hard coded into the binary
evan22:59
Really? Where did you get the binary?
I can double check when I get back to my office but I don’t remember ever seeing anything like that

The path to the config file can be altered on the command line or using an environment variable.

In bash, use export BX_CONFIG=/path/to/bx.cfg

FYI, mainnet1 hardware has been replaced and has generally been very reliable for some time. @evoskuil, if you want to switch mainnet back to mainnet1, it should be ok. The secure and testnet endpoints are no longer up, but mainnet1 (most importantly) is. mainnet2 mainnet/testnet are also up (with mainnet being a little less reliable, but also generally ok -- still old hardware). Hope to have mainnet6 online at some point 😅

Ok, I'm going to take a look at the DNS now.
evoskuil17:20
What are you referring to in terms of reliability, is this strictly hardware or have you encountered software issues?
evoskuil17:25
IIUC you have mainnet1 (clear) and mainnet2/testnet2 (clear and secure) endpoints up. Can you confirm the IP addresses for me? Also, are there hidden (TOR) services any longer?
(edited)
neillm20:57
Strictly hardware. mainnet1 IP has not changed (72.65.246.83), I just swapped the hardware out and it's not running testnet at the moment, or the secure endpoints
neillm20:58
mainnet2 info should be up to date though. mainnet1 need to be updated after I bring up the other services at some point
evoskuil21:09
Will you be able to enable testnet and secure? P2P seems to be giving me issues, but it may be the v4 build. I've just started working through everything from the bottom up now in -network.
neillm21:40
Opened up mainnet p2p and secure ports and will update the wiki. Will take a stab at tor support, but may move on to testnet before that, depending

@evan the binary I grabbed was the bx-osx-x64-qrcode one on https://github.com/libbitcoin/libbitcoin-explorer/wiki/Download-BX (from 2017)
