@neillm after doing for libbitcoin "./configure --enable-shared --disable-shared" as you suggested, i get the error again:
/usr/bin/ld: /home/myuser/base/build/lib/libboost_filesystem.a(operations.o): relocation R_X86_64_PC32 against `_ZN5boost10filesystem6detail13dir_itr_closeERPvS3_' can not be used when making a shared object; recompile with -fPIC
now.. this has to do with boost.. hmm
