@skaht If someone is willing to do the work and issue PRs, it's apparently worth pursuing 😉 As for trying to get funding for this: Maybe it makes sense to find someone willing to do it first by asking in their community, as there may be people very knowledgeable about what's needed. If there is funding, and someone to do the work, I don't see why it can't be researched/attempted.
