I'm trying to (manually, i.e. not through install.sh) build libbitcoin but I'm getting a linking error

src/.libs/libbitcoin.so: undefined reference to `secp256k1_ec_pubkey_parse'

looking at the scripts for building and the documentation I'm not quite sure what's going wrong, any ideas?
