@pmienk may be able to chime in. Requiring a user application to additionally add -lgmp instead of just using the pkg-config --libs is a small extra step, but I guess it's an extra step. Perhaps it's not possible to detect which bignum library the secp256k1 build chose and therefore it isn't assumed?
