libbitcoin-client is used to communicate with libbitcoin-server (and does not use the p2p protocol). It's designed to be high-performance, but you do need a server that has already indexed the blockchain. There was some work done to allow the server to work with litecoin and similar altcoins, so perhaps that's a route to try?
