My last work in blockchain was block caching during sync, so that a large memory machine could cache blocks received out of order up to the size of the entire chain, eliminating the block read required for validation purposes. The other remaining optimization to complete is minimizing the scope of confirmation updates.

The worst case is where it's faster to download in order off the network than it is to read from the disk. That seems like an unlikely scenario, in which case, as long as the initial parallel download is fast enough to be negligible it would always be faster even to read after downloading.
