There's nothing wrong with a subtree of referential transactions within the same block within the protocol. I don't know what mechanism you tried to use, but it's not that weird a situation to hear about. I have on a number of occasions facilitated the commitment of a transaction by spending the output with a greater fee, thereby 'paying for confirmation'
