The work I did on using shared pointer movement of address messages reduced memory consumption by about 20%, and reducing console logging verbosity by default makes everything more responsive. The node is basically an address relay. Otherwise it just ping/pongs and maintains connections. That's a pretty good foundation for adding the block/header/tx relay protocols. I've been maintaining between 500-1000 concurrent connections overnight, with no leakage or problems at all.
