Sync is now running at under an hour on my 2Gbps Internet, and I've done a few tests of unoptimized concurrent validation, which completes in 3 hours. So I've spent the past few days on confirmation queries. Download concurrency is limited by bandwidth - with no block ordering required. Validation concurrency is limited by CPU threads, and requires contiguous blocks but can validate any number concurrently. Confirmation is pure query, limited by disk speed (or exclusively RAM there is enough to hold the store), and can confirm blocks only one at a time in order - however transactions/inputs can be concurrently processed within each block.
