It's not just the limitations at sync time. I think how we think about the possibilities of using bitcoin changes too. Take for example silent payments. I think they are really cool, but can they scale with Core is the question I saw being discussed. Maybe there are solutions now, but you feel like you are in a corner. Basically, how we can use bitcoin can change if we have a properly designed system. TBH, libbitcoin has been a beacon of hope for people like me, who just couldn't find the resources to commit time to the project.
