So you might start with just parallel block download. Create a robust asynchronous and lock-free network stack that distributes work and manages peers, to get candidate chain blocks down quickly. So you get them and store them out of order. But you cannot validate them out of order, and you can't cache them in RAM unless the concurrency window is very small, defeating the advantage (I implemented and measured it)...
