The above test could be run in parallel, and does run in parallel on the maxi, which is why it's so fast. But the memory constraints of the mini are the issue. Performance tuning is a significant part of anything like this, and the strides we've made are truly extraordinary - and this is the very last open issue. We settled on what feels like the best next attempt, which I'm going to try now.
