There's just no way a single Bitcoin node to rule all others could hold up over time. They've become completely dysfunctional, and that has nothing to do with individual decisions such as op_return or zero-conf policies, taproot, segwit, or lack of action on covenants. The failure is built directly in to the organizational structure. It's led to extreme arrogance, and the backlash has created defensiveness and insularity. It was always bound to fail, just required a Schelling point, and maybe that's what this is. Because the reaction is far more significant than the technical issue. It's years of pent up frustration from all of the corners that they have pissed off, and Luke providing a trivial outlet.
