Update on macOS: I've verified that our custom
fallocate on macOS is working as expected. The disk full fault we had on Linux was a result of relying on sparse allocation via ftruncate . That's resolved by using fallocate but macOS doesn't implement it. So disk full should be working properly on macOS now. This is the proof of proper behavior, with file system sparse and full sizes compared against the Windows sizes, with default initial sizes and files closed vs. open. Exact same to the byte, and physically allocated.
