The first thing it does upon table creation and upon startup, is to size all of the tables to their configured minimum. Oh... that was broken on linux. That's why we had the disk full bug. It would report that it had sized the tables, but it wouldn't actually size them. So we fixed that bug and it no longer crashes when running out of space, because it actually guarantees it has the space.
