Checking the flame graph with 64 threads now, write contention has entirely disappeared, where before the above change it was dominant and milestone CPU has dropped to almost nothing, averaging <15%, saying the same thing (contention burns CPU). And we certainly are not writing at bus/RAM speed (no disk I/O at all given the RAM size). So this is a picture of being network limited.
