Windows slightly outperforms macOS and Linux because its implementation is native. Linux can slightly outperform Windows on its native mmap, but that only happens when operating-system wide paging config is manually configured to the scenario. When that is off, even as much as 5% in one case, Linux collapses entirely (grinds to a halt). The behavior must adjust dynamically based on feedback in order to be close to optimal. macOS doesn't even allow manual OS-wide config, and while Linux does it is not sufficient (and not realistic for deployment). There is a slight cost of dynamic adjustment but it's well worth the consistently high performance, lack of pathological collapse, and lack of OS level config.
