The major cost with validation however is transaction read/deserialization time (in addition to previous outputs). The node is fast, but we are basically reading the entire store off the network, and then again off the disk. This is optimized for min sync time and max query speed, and performs best with full RAM capacity (like 1TB), not for min validation time. But I think it will at least be competitive there as well.
