Spent some time in the performance profiler today. Identified 10% of total sync time as low hanging optimization fruit. Implemented one of those items (script length caching upon construct), which was accounting for about 8% of total sync time. Just fired up the node on my max machine, and it's finally hitting close to my true 2Gbps bandwidth limit. I started working this problem over 7 years ago, when the full chain was about 450k blocks. At the time I had just purchased this same computer. The only difference is the WAN bandwidth. I just downloaded, deserialized, checked, and serialized to the relational store those 450k blocks in just 10.5 minutes. That's on pace to complete the full chain in less than 1 hour.
