somewhat unrelated, im very curious what insights you guys have regarding mmap'd db architectures. ive been exploring mdbx as a replacement for leveldb in core as sort of a moonshot side experiment, and mdbx (fork of lmdb) is essentially a mmap'd shadow paged btree. we saw some really promising benchmarks, but also a ton of write amplification. curious if you guys have any insights, since it seems you've rolled your own mmaped db architecture?

There are of course tradeoffs. Concurrency imposes synchronization cost, which has to be measured against the benefit. For example, it is not required that txs be validated with their block, and it is not required that all previous blocks (or txs) be downloaded in order to validate a given block's txs. However tracking and notifying a tx (or block) that all of its required previous outputs have been downloaded is more costly than the partial ordering by block constraint.
