I also incorporated the block.fee() write into the block validated record. The write has always been there but it didn't formerly compute the actual value (sum of tx fees). So this is also coming at no additional cost. It's not required for validation/confirmation, it's just a query optimization, such as for a block explorer. It's otherwise costly because all tx output values and prevout values are required for fee computation.
