I spent yesterday implementing the direct translation from the store for header, block, and tx, into wire serialization. The low level store getters are provided a stream reader, so I just pass in a stream writer reference with the getters and read directly into the output stream. Since the writer is just an interface the caller can pass in a hex stream writer, which allows for streaming directly to hex (text) for the interfaces that require it (like electrum/bitcoind json-rpc). We could also pass a socket writer reference and pass directly from the store into the socket buffer.
