Just adding more channels (12 vs. 6) to the single machine bs-bs sync reduced the total 900k block milestone sync time from 2.24 to 1.77 hrs.

The second SSD is slower, so that's part of it. But the change implies that concurrency had been the bottleneck. Each channel runs on its own strand, effectively limiting concurrency to 6 (or 12) threads on both ends. On a 100 peer internet sync it's limited to 16 network threads by default config. So I'll bump up the peer count to 16 tonight.
